An 11-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital after reportedly falling from the Splash Canyon ride at Drayton Manor theme park.

Emergency services rushed to the Staffordshire theme park at 2.25pm after reports of a person in the water close to the fast-paced river rapids ride.

The girl, from the Leicester area, was treated at the scene close to the water-based ride before being airlifted to hospital. The extent of the girl’s injuries are not yet known.

Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe, of Staffordshire Police, said: “We were called at 2.25pm this afternoon to reports that a child had fallen from a water ride at Drayton Manor Park.

Visitors told how they heard crying and screaming coming from the main entrance of the ride.

Graham Johnstone, 40, said: “The first I knew something was wrong when I saw staff running over to the ride and turn people away.

“Minutes later an air ambulance appeared overhead.

“All you could hear was crying coming from the steps leading to the ride entrance. It was awful. Somebody said a little child had drowned but you just don’t know.

“The emergency services were on the scene so quickly. I saw the air ambulance land but it didn’t take off again. I just hope the kid was ok.”

Drayton Manor said the ride was closed after the incident and staff assisted emergency services. See full photos on Mirror
