Michigan woman with special needs held in shed and sold for sex by couple

A Michigan couple kept a woman with special needs in a vacant shed and sold her online for sex, police said.

Michael Welch, 38, and Misty George, 30, of Macomb Township, were charged Tuesday with “human trafficking and prostitution earnings,” FOX2 Detroit reported. George was also charged with “using a computer to commit a crime,” the media outlet reported.

It was not clear when the suspects were arrested.

Welch and George, who were believed to be dating and living together, were accused of keeping a woman, 29, with “both mental and physical disabilities” in a vacant shed close to their residence, police said.

They were also accused of creating advertisements selling a date with the woman, who was not identified, and putting the ads on an online website. FOX2 Detroit reported a few men answered the advertisements and paid Welch and George for sexual services.

The woman was originally allowed to live in the couple’s home but she was forced out after she could not afford to pay rent that Welch and George requested. The woman was also barred from using the home’s shower and restroom.

Police were notified of the crime by the victim’s family on Sept. 12, the Detroit Free Press reported.

“Once the victim left the mobile home park, family discovered what had occurred and contacted police,” a press release from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said.

It was not clear how long the victim was living in the shed and how she met George and Welch.

“Instead of helping this profoundly special-needs person, George and Welch took her support money, forced her to live rough in an outside shed, and sold her as a prostitute,” Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. “As your heart breaks for this vulnerable woman, your conscience is shocked by the abusive cruelty one human being is capable of showing to another.”

He added: “The Sheriff and the Prosecutor’s Office are resolved to bring some measure of justice to this young woman, and to get her the support and treatment she needs.”

After Welch was arraigned, he tried to escape from a police vehicle and a short foot chase ensued before officers caught him and returned him to Macomb County Jail, police said. Welch will face new charges for trying to escape.

George was ordered to be held on a $75,000 bond while Welch received a $50,000 bond. They were both slated to return to court on Oct. 24.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham urged parents to check their children’s social media accounts for human trafficking warning signs.

“Be wary of opportunities that seem to be good to true and always be aware of your surroundings,” Wickersham said. “Parents are urged to monitor their children’s social media accounts and look into those people who associate with your children.”

Oyo government shuts Obasanjo Farms in Ibadan

The Oyo State government on Tuesday sealed Obasanjo Farms and 15 other businesses over failure to pay the state’s Environmental Development Levy.

The enforcement order was executed by the state’s inter-ministerial enforcement unit being coordinated by the Board of Internal Revenue.

Other companies affected by the order included Black Horse, Heinemann Educational Books, Lister Flour Mills, Evans Brother, Butterfield bakery, Chicken Republic, MRS oil and Rasmed Publicity.

Chairman of the board, Bicci Alli, told journalists that the order became necessary after the failure of the companies to comply with the state tax laws’ directives despite being served reminders on several occasions.

He said, “We went to restrain some corporate organisations that failed to pay what is due to the Oyo State government after giving due notices, demand notices and even public notices to that effect and they failed to pay.

“So we went to those places to stop them from having access to their premises until they comply with the directive and do the right thing.”

Nnamdi Kanu is in London, says Orji Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday said the leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is in London.

He claimed that Kanu fled to the United Kingdom during the time the military were looking for him.

Kalu disclosed this in an interview with newsmen after meeting former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi, IBB, in Minna.

He said: “Nnamdi Kanu is where I told you he is, he is in London. He is safe”.

Kalu explained that he visited IBB to canvass support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kalu explained that his campaign for President Buhari had nothing to do with the South-East getting the presidency in 2023 or his perceived presidential ambition.

On the crises over the emergence of candidates at the forthcoming primary election nationwide, Kalu said conflict of interests were normal in politics.

“The crisis is part of political development, if there is no crisis there will not be political development. Crisis is what makes political development there must be crisis and there must be solution”.

The former Governor and his entourage arrived at Babangida’s Hilltop residence Tuesday afternoon in three black Toyota SUVs and two Hillux Vans.

Kalu was ushered into the guest room, where he held a 2-hour closed-door meeting with IBB.
