Paul Pogba snubbed Manchester United’s supporters after the 4-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday and left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologising to fans on the pitch.
United’s top-four hopes were dealt another blow after they produced arguably their worst display of the season at Goodison Park.
Solskjaer’s side were two down by the break following goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson, while Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott added to United’s misery in the second half to complete Everton’s comfortable victory.
At the full-time whistle, Solskjaer left United’s dugout and walked over to the far side of the pitch to approach the travelling supporters.
The Norwegian held up both hands to signal an apology to United’s supporters, while Diogo Dalot and Scott McTominay stayed behind to applaud the away fans.
Solskjaer was also seen telling United’s players who had stayed on the pitch to approach their supporters before heading back to the dressing room.
Pogba, however, swapped shirts with his France teammate Kurt Zouma and headed straight down after a brief conversation with Everton’s central defender.
‘I’m furious the fact he’s had to go over and apologise for them,’ former United captain Gary Neville told Sky Sports after the game.
‘I’ve often said if you’ve got weeds in the garden, you’ve got to get rid of them.
‘But there’s some Japanese knot weed at that football club and it’s attacking the foundations of the house, and it needs dealing with properly.’
Solskjaer, meanwhile, apologised again to United fans in his post-match interview.
‘From the first whistle everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to the fans. They’re the only people with the badge on today who can hold their head high, because we can’t,’ the United boss told Sky Sports.
‘Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result. Talent has never been enough.
‘We just didn’t perform. That was not worthy of a Manchester United team.
‘We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club. We have a perfect chance to make amends on Wednesday [against Manchester City].’
