Egypt had long been a source of suffering and oppression for Israel. They were one of the major superpowers of the day. They thought themselves unbeatable. But the warning Jeremiah gave here showed how they would be defeated and scattered all over! The wicked do not prosper for long. Though they think they have power to oppress the poor and the weak, their power is only temporary. God will act against them at the right time. Jeremiah’s prophecy against Egypt comes in the form of a poem (vv.3–12), with a lot of symbolic language.

Egypt’s army is likened to a mighty river in full flood which could cause great destruction (vv.7–8). River Nile was synonymous with Egypt. It was the center of economy and life of all Egypt. Egypt has horses and soldiers with armour (vv.3,4,9). Egyptians pride themselves in their strength, but who is really in control (v.10)? Destruction is promised for Egypt (vv.11–12).

Powerful nations today also need to look beyond themselves to God and remember that he is in control. Rather than trusting in their military might or their economic power, they must place their trust in the Lord God.

Practice/Word Application
• What? Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall

Unrighteous Seeds
One important purpose of the Christian marriage is to produce righteous children─the children that are properly trained in the way of the LORD. When a Christian marries a non–Christian, it negates the spiritual oneness in marriage, resulting in negative consequences for the couple nurturing the children in an atmosphere of disunity and contradicting faith. The products of such mixed marriage are unrighteous seeds.

Prayer Points
• Thank you dear Lord, that you are in control of world events.
• Thank God for the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His resurrection for the remission of the sins of mankind: the only assurance of eternity with God.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Romans 10:9–10
