Message: Don’t be dismayed, God is with you God declares things before they happen again and again in the Bible. The warning about King Nebuchadnezzar’s plans to attack Egypt was given to keep Israel from trusting in Egypt (42:14–18). God uses one superpower to defeat another. God may be invisible, but he determines the destiny of the nations. He raises one ruler over another, whether they acknowledge him or not. The bravest of the Egyptians would flee in terror, as well as their hired mercenaries, and all their allies! They would speak out against Pharaoh because of the fierce battle they would encounter from the Babylonian forces.

In the height of her power, Egypt was like a sleek cow; but a gadfly would bite her till she fled in terror. God describes Nebuchadnezzar in graphic language again and again in the Bible. He was one of the greatest emperors the world has ever seen, yet in due time, he too would perish. But this time God was using him to punish Egypt and her idols (vv.25–26).

God promised Israel that their land would be restored in due time (vv.27–28). The people would return to their land. God punishes us to pave the way for our restoration when we repent. Let us therefore, learn to accept his discipline knowing that it is for our own good.
