TODAY’S READING
Psalm 42:1-11

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. – Psalm 42:5 (NIV)

There are times when I wake up discouraged. There is no particular reason for me to feel this way, but nonetheless the feeling is overwhelmingly there. I struggle to find motivation and purpose. As a result, I become angry with myself. I think, I should be thankful! God has blessed me with so much. I berate myself and try to fix the way I feel. When that doesn’t work, I feel ashamed that I have a comfortable life but still feel sad.

Psalm 42 reminds me that many people in the Bible also felt discouraged. As verse five demonstrates, sometimes they too felt disheartened for no apparent reason. This psalm teaches me that it is human to feel discouraged sometimes. But no matter the cause, we can be honest with God about our emotions. God does not expect us always to be happy. Our Creator just wants us to be honest. The Almighty hears our cries and is ready to comfort us when we faithfully open our hearts.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, we cry out to you in our discouragement. You are our help, our peace, and our comfort. You are the source of our hope. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When I feel discouraged, I will go to God.
