Roger Federer scares me, says Dominic Thiem ahead of ATP Finals clash

Tennis ace Dominic Thiem has admitted Roger Federer scares him.

The Austrian lock horns with the Swiss superstar later this week at the ATP Finals in London.

Speaking ahead of the showdown, Thiem has admitted he feels a little rattled, reports Express

He said: “I’m looking forward to it, but I’m also a little scared, because I want to keep my positive head to head against him.

“I am certainly one of the very few who have a positive one.”

Despite his reticence, Thiem doesn’t have a disastrous record against Federer.

He defeated the 37-year-old in Rome 2016 on clay and Halle on grass.

Thiem only lost to the Swiss once – at the 2016 Brisbane International semis.

Federer is coming into the tournament off the back of a Paris Masters defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Surprisingly, the veteran ace has admitted he is prepared to wait for his 100th career title.

Federer secured the 99th trophy of his career at the Swiss Indoors last month.

He could have bagged his century at the Paris Masters had it not been for Djokovic gatecrashing the party.

Federer is the second seed at the ATP Finals and faces Kei Nishikori tonight at 8pm.

He has won the event a record six times but Djokovic can draw level with success in London.

“I don’t think it matters where I win my 100th as long as I win at some point. That is going to be exciting,” Federer said.Roger Federer scares me, says Dominic Thiem ahead of ATP Finals clash

“I think if I won here it is more about winning the World Tour Finals rather than my 100th.

“I think I love playing this event, I always have, ever since I qualified back in 2002.

“That was a massive highlight in my career, to be in the top eight for the first time in my career.

“Now I am here at the O2, it is a great venue, I have difficult matches and that is my focus here.

“I know it goes hand-in-hand but the focus is on having a good tournament here.

“When the 100 happens it does, hopefully sooner than later but I am happy to wait as well.”
