Court finally grants DSS permission to detain Sowore for 45 days

Abuja Federal high court sitting has passed the judgment that allows the DSS to detain the convener of RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, for 45 days

Justice Taiwo who ruled on an ex parte application by the DSS, whose officials arrested Sowore a few days ago declared that the detention order would be renewable after September 21st, the expiration of the first 45 days.

The DSS initially applied for the permission on Tuesday to detain Omoyele Sowore for up to 90 days to review him over his protest for revolution ahead of the RevolutionNow protest which was practiced in states across Nigerian states on Monday.

The department of State Services filed its application on the provision of section 27(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act.

Justice Taiwo while ruling on an ex parte application said he had to grant the application, “only to the extent” of allowing the DSS to keep Sowore in custody for just 45 days for the applicant to conclude its investigation.”

He stated that it would be termed as a failure in duty if he did not grant the request for a detention order.

He also stated should the claimant need more time to achieve its investigation after the end of the first 45 days, it had the opportunity to ask for its renewal.
