Today’s DCLM Daily Manna Devotional 28th December 2017 – Pastor W.F. Kumuyi

TOPIC: Power in the Written Word

BIBLE TEXT: Ezekiel 24:1-14

KEY VERSE: “Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day” (Ezekiel 24:2).

MESSAGE: God has told us repeatedly to obey His laws as we read it regularly. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

DCLM Daily Manna Devotional: Pass the Baton

And so in January 588BC, that is some two and a half years after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the Lord appeared to Ezekiel the prophet and asked him to record that date of the destruction of the City of David.

There had been a 30-month siege on Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar’s Chaldean forces resulting in its final capture in 586BC. Earlier, God led Jeremiah to prophecy this fall in Jeremiah 25:9-11. God asked Ezekiel to write down the great day of His judgment on Judah for her sin of rebellion and idolatry. Between verses 6 and 14, God gave graphic details of what befell Jerusalem. A siege would lead to famine, devastation and finally death and captivity.

Jerusalem would be purged of her iniquity and defilement and she would cease to be a city. We ought to honour the written Word of God the way the Lord accords attention to it. We need to read and meditate on the written Word so that we do not fall into the errors of the past that brought judgment on those who committed them as a result of neglecting divine laws.

DCLM Daily Manna Devotional: Beware of False Prophet

So, we must constantly remember His Word to avoid falling into misleading doctrines. As demonstrated by our Lord when He was tempted in the wilderness by Satan, the written Word is the sword of the Spirit we can always use to overcome trials and attempts by purveyors of unscriptural doctrines and practices.

The record of God’s word is also meant to comfort the believer. When we read it and appropriate the promises therein, we receive comfort in times of persecution and discouragement.

Thought for the day: Follow the Word; it never fails.
