Beauty brand Dove has apologised for an online advert accused of being “racist” by outraged people on social media.

The company said it had “missed the mark” with an image posted on Facebook , which showed a black woman removing her top appearing to reveal a white woman underneath.

In the four panel image which has since been deleted, a black woman wearing a brown t-shirt takes her top off.

Underneath, she appears to reveal a white woman wearing a cream t-shirt.

Reports suggest a third woman was also pictured in the advert, but her image does not form part of the photo being circulated on social media.

The campaign has since been removed from Facebook and Dove tweeted: “An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully.

“We deeply regret the offence it caused.”

Dove was responding to criticism after the image was shared widely on social media.

Twitter user La’Quell, using the handle @Caramelxotic posted: “@Dovecare to explain this racist Ad to me.”
