Wesley Fofana has become the most expensive defender in Chelsea’s history, after completing a transfer from Leicester City worth £75 million ($88m) including add-ons.
The French defender breaks the previous record set by Marc Cucurella, who joined from Brighton for £62m earlier in the window.
Fofana has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old will partner Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva in Thomas Tuchel’s three-man defence at Chelsea.
Fofana joined Leicester City in 2020, but missed most of the 2021/2022 campaign after fracturing his ankle but returned to full fitness in March.
The transfer fee the Foxes paid to Saint-Étienne was reported as up to £36.5 million.
