God’s rule for all living things is to grow or die. It is a rule which nobody can change. If it is a plant, anytime it stops growing, it will die. If it is a person, even an animal, once it stops growing, it will die. It is the same thing with man’s spiritual life. The moment you stop growing spiritually, you die. However, there are things that affect spiritual growth.
Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen. There are conditions to be met. Remember that growth is a process. For example, for you to grow maize, you need a good seed, the right soil, water, etc. There would be no growth if nothing is planted. Without these necessary conditions, all efforts to grow the maize would end in futility.
If you plant nothing into your spiritual life and you are expecting growth to come, you are wasting time. This is where the Holy Spirit comes in; the action of the Holy Spirit is essential to the believer to purify his spiritual life, just as chlorophyll is to the green plants.
The process starts with the new birth. That is, salvation through Christ. Having surrendered your life to Christ, the good soil has been prepared for the seed of God’s Word to germinate and grow as the Holy Spirit waters it. Failure to read, study and meditate on God’s Word will lead to leanness of soul, poor and stunted spiritual growth.
It is important to know that growth comes with a lot of discomfort. To grow in anything, you must face challenges; it is your ability to surmount these challenges that gives you success. Just like every fruit is first of all bitter before it is ripe, so also there is no growth without pain.
As you endure the pain of persecution and you persevere, you overcome the challenges of life and become a better person in the Lord. Through such experiences, you produce spiritual fruits that are able to shape your life and make you more like Jesus.
Interestingly, spiritual growth is a continuous process and a lifelong experience in your Christian journey until Christ comes. I pray that your spiritual life shall be fruitful and not stagnant, in the Name of Jesus.
