TOPIC: The Unforgiving Servant

Bible In One Year:
1 Kings 6-7; Luke 20:27-47

Memory Verse:
Matthew 6:14-15 – For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Motivational Quotes:
Forgive today, it can save your life tomorrow. Forgiveness is worth more than a million dollars. The weak cannot forgive. Forgiveness is a characteristic of the strong.

Prophetic Word for today:
As you decide to let go of those who offended you, heaven of favor shall open for you in the mighty Name of Jesus.

Fire Scripture:
Matthew 18:21-35

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, when someone won’t stop doing wrong to me, how many times must I forgive them? Seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, you must forgive them more than seven times. You must continue to forgive them even if they do wrong to you seventy-seven times.

23 “So God’s kingdom is like a king who decided to collect the money his servants owed him. 24 The king began to collect his money. One servant owed him several thousand pounds of silver. 25 He was not able to pay the money to his master, the king. So the master ordered that he and everything he owned be sold, even his wife and children. The money would be used to pay the king what the servant owed.

26 “But the servant fell on his knees and begged, ‘Be patient with me. I will pay you everything I owe.’ 27 The master felt sorry for him. So he told the servant he did not have to pay. He let him go free.
28 “Later, that same servant found another servant who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him around the neck and said, ‘Pay me the money you owe me!’

29 “The other servant fell on his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me. I will pay you everything I owe.’
30 “But the first servant refused to be patient. He told the judge that the other servant owed him money, and that servant was put in jail until he could pay everything he owed. 31 All the other servants saw what happened. They felt very sorry for the man. So they went and told their master everything that happened.

32 “Then the master called his servant in and said, ‘You evil servant. You begged me to forgive your debt, and I said you did not have to pay anything! 33 So you should have given that other man who serves with you the same mercy I gave you.’ 34 The master was very angry, so he put the servant in jail to be punished. And he had to stay in jail until he could pay everything he owed.

35 “This king did the same as my heavenly Father will do to you. You must forgive your brother or sister with all your heart, or my heavenly Father will not forgive you.”

MFM MOUNTAIN TOP LIFE DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

The parable of the unforgiving servant, as given by our Lord Jesus Christ, teaches us Christians about virtues such as mercy, love and tolerance. The unmerciful servant owed his master, the king, ten thousand talents, which he could not afford to pay, even if he worked all year round.

However, he found favour with his master. He was forgiven and his debt was cancelled. Meanwhile, he met a fellow servant who owed him a hundred denarii. The debtor begged him to forgive him, but he refused bluntly. Rather, he cast him into the prison until he could make repayment.

Now, the ten thousand talents is about sixty million denarii compared to a hundred denarii. He was forgiven of such huge debt, but he couldn’t forgive his fellow bondservant of a little debt. For this evil act, the king reversed his forgiveness and he was delivered to the tormentors until he repaid all he owed.

Unforgiveness is a road-block. It hinders mercy, testimonies and breakthroughs. Despite all our numerous sins, God still forgives and cleanses us with the atoning blood of Jesus, who is also our advocate (1 John 2:9-10).

In the Lord’s prayer, we pledge to forgive those who sin against us. Another name for marriage is forgiveness. If you find it difficult to overlook offenses, then how will you cope in marriage? Your spouse will offend you again and again. How many times will you keep on reporting to family members and friends?

In 1 Samuel 25:2-42, David had wanted to avenge himself on Nabal but Abigail pleaded with him and he turned back. Within ten days, God smote Nabal and he died.

God knows how to handle whatever may come up between two or more people. Allow God to intervene. You must show mercy on others as you want God to show mercy on you (James 2:13). Appreciate God for the salvation you cannot afford to pay for.

Unforgiveness can destroy a Christian and close the heaven of God’s grace. Therefore, forgive for your own benefit.
