Hillary Clinton kept pneumonia secret from all but her top aides and tried to ‘power through’

The US Presidential candidate has admitted she “should have gotten some rest’ before her collapse at the 9/11 ceremony on Sunday.

Hillary Clinton kept her pneumonia diagnosis a secret from all but her closest aides, as she tried to “power through” the illness that led to her collapse at a 9/11 ceremony .

As Mrs Clinton , 68, admitted she “should have gotten some rest sooner”, pictures emerged which seemed to show a medic taking her pulse just before she passed out on Sunday.

The woman also appeared to ask Mrs Clinton to squeeze her fingers, a neurological test which has fuelled speculation that the Democratic Party hopeful has Parkinson’s disease .

Mrs Clinton’s team said she would return to the campaign trail on Friday.

On Monday night, Mrs Clinton called CNN and told anchorman Anderson Cooper she had kept her illness secret because she didn’t “think it was going to be that big a deal”.

She said: “Like a lot of people, I just thought I could keep going. Obviously that didn’t work out so well.”

Mrs Clinton said she was “feeling fine and getting better”.

But Don Fowler, ex-chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said a replacement candidate should be lined up immediately in case Mrs Clinton is unable to carry on.

Mr Fowler said: “It’s something you would be a fool not to prepare for.” He said strong support for current Vice President Joe Biden and losing nominee Bernie Sanders could split the party.

He urged high-ranking Democrats, including Barack Obama , to work together now to decide on a replacement.
