Romance: Dating apps have made it easier to meet new people than ever before.

And while that’s great for some single folk, the downside is that it’s never been easier for people who are already in a relationship to cheat.

After all, why have a high-risk affair with the woman next door when you can swipe right on a stranger?

A study by research firm GlobalWebIndex found that 42% of people using Tinder already have a partner, so if you’re going to date using apps, it’s essential to keep your wits about you.

Here are nine signs the person you’re dating is already taken:

He doesn’t use WhatsApp
If a guy claims he doesn’t use WhatsApp, it’s a red flag.

Let’s face it, most people, especially single guys, have WhatsApp – it’s the go-to app for chatting.

But if a guy is taken, then he probably has two phones: a regular phone and a cheap pay-as-you-go one.

His regular phone has apps, photos, emails and all the details of his coupled-up life. But his second phone is a cheap anonymous one, which he uses just to contact women on the side.

Since it’s a pay-as-you-go phone, it doesn’t include data for apps like WhatsApp and only allows him to send texts and make calls.

He’s away most weekends
I dated a guy who had a house in Dorset. He claimed he just loved the English countryside and liked to escape London at the weekends to be in nature.

Unlikely.

If a guy has a second home outside London, chances are, he has a wife living there too.

He doesn’t pick up your calls
If the guy you’re dating doesn’t answer your calls, and always seems to call back later, maybe he isn’t alone when he’s receiving them.

After all, he can’t take calls from you when he’s in front of his wife.

He pays for dates with cash
Be wary of a guy who always pay for dates with cash.

Cash is untraceable. It’s a lot harder to get away with cheating if you’re paying for dates from the joint account.

There’s no record of him online
Pretty much everyone has an internet trail these days. If the guy you’re dating doesn’t, then something’s probably up.

He could have given you a false name because he doesn’t want the real (married) him to be discovered.

He says he’s a commitment-phobe
I dated a guy who told me he ‘follows the chemistry’ and admitted to being a commitment-phobe.

If a guy says something like this, there’s a slim chance he’s single and just being honest.

But if he’s showing other red flags, then what he probably means is that he just wants sex and has no interest in committing to you since he’s already committed to someone else.

He’s vague about his past
It’s easy to get delusional when we’re into someone; it’s how online dating scammers manage to convince their victims they need $4,000 for their uncle’s life-saving operation.

When we desperately want something to be true, logic goes out the window.

Similarly, if the guy you’re dating is incredibly vague about his past, don’t delude yourself that he’s shy about opening up, a little guarded, or just a private person.

No. He probably doesn’t want to tell you about his past because it involves his other half.

He has lots of work commitments
It’s a classic, but if a guy seems to have a ton of work commitments, you have to be real with yourself over whether those commitments are work-related at all.

He acts blase
Guys who are already taken are not about to become emotionally invested in their side chick.

If he acts blase, then don’t kid yourself that he’s playing hard to get. It could just be that somebody else has already got him.
