Two planes collided today in the South of France, leading to the death of two Brits and one was injured
The first British casualty has now been confirmed as Andrew Buck.
The crash took place at around 12.45pm on Wednesday near the high mountain Maddalena Pass on the Alpine border with Italy.
Andrew’s dad Les Buck wrote on Facebook following his son’s death: “Gut wrenching news this morning that our son Andrew Buck of Seaham Harbour has died in a light aircraft in the French Alps. Oh god, how do Dianne and me carry on. Love you son”.
The plane that Les Buck was in belonged to Purple Aviation, a British company based at Eshott Airfield in Northumberland.
The local police force will now investigate to determine the causes of the crash.
A statement by French authorities says that the two planes were part of a group of five aircraft with five pilots and one passenger.
The pilot of the second aircraft, which was forced into an emergency landing, was unharmed despite landing on a “hilly field”.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities about the death of two British men in France and we are offering assistance to their families.”
