Scripture Union Daily Guide 10 September 2023 Outline:

The biblical account clearly attributes the fall of Judah to their sin: beginning from Manasseh who takes the blunt of the blames (v.3), all successive kings (apart from Josiah) “did evil in the eyes of the Lord” (v.37).

Today’s passage recounts what happened under three kings of Judah – Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah, whose name was changed from Mattaniah (v.17). Judah became a vassal state to Babylon under Jehoiakim, but Jehoiakim rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar (24:1). Notice the consequence of this rebellion in 24:2-4. His son, Jehoiachin, faced the consequences: he reigned for only three months and was the first to be sent to exile in Babylon with the cream of the people of Jerusalem, after the temple had been ransacked and all valuables removed to Babylon (see 24:10-17).

Chapter 24:20a provides the conclusion to the entire drama on the fall of Jerusalem: “It was because of the Lord’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end, He thrust them from His presence.” What does this teach us? Let us avoid anything that can make us incur the wrath of God. As children of God, we should never tolerate any form of sin in our lives. Sin separates us from God and can lead us into “exile”, misery, away from the comforting presence of God in our lives.
