TOPIC: Out of Zion

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 50:1-15

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 17 August 2023 MESSAGE:

What is true worship? Asaph seeks to answer this question in this Psalm. In vs.1-6, he presents God as the judge who summons His covenant people to account for the way they worship him. Note the four titles of God in these verses. What do they signify? Consecrated (godly) ones (v.5), that is Israel, with whom God made the mosaic covenant (Exodus 24:7) is the same people He is accusing (v.7). What truth does this reveal to us? What lessons can we draw from this?

God never eats the animals that were sacrificed to Him. A host of the sacrifices only provide food for the priests. The children of Israel felt they were fulfilling their responsibilities merely by offering their sacrifices promptly. But notice God’s assessment of these in vs.9-13 (compare Jeremiah 7:21-23; Hosea 6:6).

God desires our commitment to Him more than our sacrifices. He needs us. He wants to fellowship with us, to be our friend. That was the reason He made man in the first place. Until sin separated man from Him, He used to visit in the cool of the evening to fellowship with Adam and Eve. His desire is to do that with us even today.

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
