TOPIC: Sources of Temptation

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, may the entrance of your word bring light and life to all I will do today.

SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: James 1:13-27

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th October 2023 OUTLINE:

God does not entice us with evil nor is He tempted by evil (v.13), hence the caution not to ascribe to God the source of temptation (v.13). God is never responsible for man’s sin.

Notice the implied contrast between “trials’ (see yesterday’s reflections) and temptation (today’s reflections). Whereas trials come from outside sources, temptation comes when we are drawn away by our own fleshly desires and enticed (v.14). Could it be possible that we often give Satan too much credit for his “tempting powers” and fail to recognize that we are drawn away by our own desires? Notice the progression from temptation to death (vs.13-15) to which we are alerted lest we become deceived (v.16).

Unlike temptation that comes from within, everything good and perfect comes from God, our Father. Meditate on the fact that God’s goodness is constant. There is no variation with Him. Instead of shadows, He is the Father of light (v.17).

The fact that He has given us birth through the word of truth is the guarantee that we are a kind of first fruits of all He created (v.18) and that we are saved from deception. Between vs.19-27, identify and reflect on the three things James points out as indicators that we are born through the word of truth.
