TOPIC: Favouritism is Sin

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.

SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: James 2:1-13

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Q 4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
• Q 6: Is there any prayer for me to remember?

Compare the reference to Jesus Christ as the glorious one (v.1) with Deuteronomy 10:17 (and Acts 10:34). Writing perhaps somewhere between AD 44 and 48, James wrote to a very partial age, filled with prejudice and hatred based on class, ethnicity, nationality, and religious background. Even today, it is common practice to accord special honour and preferential treatment to the rich and wealthy people.

A significant aspect of the work of Jesus was to break down these walls that divided humanity, and to bring forth one new race of mankind in Him (see Ephesians 2:14-15). God shows no partiality, so neither should those who belong to the household of faith. Before God, we are all equal (see Galatians 3:28).

Notice the open rebuke and correction that James gives in vs.2-4. Notice also the contrast that James draws between the poor and the rich in vs.5-7. How does this compare to present time? God is concerned with the plight of the poor. They are often oppressed and impoverished by those in power and the rich.

As God’s children, we should do all that is within our power to help the poor and enhance their welfare. It is worth noting that God regards partiality as sin in the same way as adultery and murder (vs.9-12).

PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
For further action: Identify ways people discriminate against others in your church or workplace. Is there any way in which you could have aided that? Or do you partake in tribal prejudice? Ask God for forgiveness and pray for grace to make a difference.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Malachi 3:10
