Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th March 2023 MESSAGE

What can we learn about the life circumstances of Esther from this chapter? She was in exile, a refugee (vs.6-7) and an orphan (v.7). As we read Esther’s story, it is important for us to pause and ask how we support young girls like her in our families and society.

Even in exile, Mordecai was very mindful of his family, and adopted Esther. He “raised her as his own daughter” (v.7). He taught Esther how to keep her identity in this new culture (v.10). He was keen to know how she was faring in her new place (v.10). His influence on Esther had a whole-life and lifetime impact. Even after being crowned a Queen, Esther “was still following Mordecai’s directions, just as she did when she lived in his home” (v.20) – wow! This is such an inspiring and challenging example of parenting for every family and mentoring for every leader!

While we see clear evidence of God’s sovereignty in the events recorded here, this chapter also throws light on the regrets of a rushed decision (v.1), and the abusive sexual behaviour of the King (v.14). Culture cannot make right what God’s Word forbids!

Take note of vs.21-23. It formed the basis for Mordecai’s subsequent upliftment.
