Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st February 2021 Message:
The fact that we are with Jesus in our life’s journey does not exonerate us from encountering life challenges (vv. 22 – 23). There are occasions it may appear that Jesus has abandoned us, or no longer cares. But we only need to call upon Him. Notice how He promptly responded to the disciples’ cry for help (v.26b; cf. Psalm 145:18-19).
Notice Jesus’ question to his disciples (v. 26). What does the disciples’ amazement and question (v.27) reveal about their knowledge of Christ? Jesus’ action confirmed His authority over nature (v.27; cf. Job 38:1-11). What storm are you facing in your life’s journey? In times of trouble, who do you call for help? Remember, Jesus has the power to calm every storm in your life (Ephesians 3:20).
The healing of two demon possessed men in the region of the Gadarenes (v.28a) was very striking. Read vs.29-30 again and take note of the following truths:
1. Jesus’ ministry which was largely confined to the land of Israel (Matthew 15:24) now moves to a Gentile territory. What lessons do you learn from this as you seek to fulfil the Great Commission?
2. The demons acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God and the judge who will put an end to their activities (v.29; cf. Revelation 20:10). Does Satan recognize the authority of Christ vested in you?
What else does the story of the demoniac teach us about the value of one soul to Jesus? How should that dictate the way we share the gospel message? Why did the people beg Jesus to leave their region?
