TOPIC: Like Father Like Son

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: 1 Kings 15: 1 ─ 24

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Message: This story is a strong warning to every parent that what we do and say at home and in life has more impact than what the child will learn outside from home. Abijah, like his father, did what was evil in the sight of the Lord (v.3). Pause for a moment and see what legacy you are leaving for your family. It is not too late to start to change if need be.

People say, “It is better late than never”. It was a refreshing time for Judah when King Asa ruled. He wanted to please God so much that he deposed his idol–worshipping grandmother from her position as queen mother (v.13). Notice other godly actions he took in v.12. While Asa failed to remove some worship places, “Nevertheless the heart of Asa was true to the Lord all his days” (v.14). We are not perfect and may fail to do all we want or need to do for the Lord, but God looks at our motives in all we do.

King Asa bought peace from Ben–hadad using temple treasure instead of asking God to fight for him. What would you have done if you were king Asa? “But in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet”.

Read 2 Chronicles 16:12 to hear the sad comment about Asa concerning this. We should always strive to begin well and end on a happy note.

Practice/Word Application
• So what? Reflect to see if you are true to the Lord. List areas you need to reform

Defilements

Defilement has a negative connotation. It carries with it the idea of being inwardly dirty or polluted. Unhealthy materials, thoughts and motives defile a man. Purity of heart should be treasured above any physical activity we do in the service of God. The concept of separation from the defiling influences is very fundamental to God’s relationship with us. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Defilements oppose holy living.

Prayer points
• Help me dear Lord to live up to your expectations and fulfil your eternal purpose for my generation.
• Pray for the activities of interdenominational Christian fellowships – OFNC, ACF etc. ─ in their ministry to foreigners.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Mark 16:17–18
