TOPIC: Do What Is Right
OPENING PRAYER: Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.
SCRIPTURE: 2 KINGS 18:1-16
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
The testimony, “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (v.3) is more to be desired than gold. That was the first description of Hezekiah as king of Judah and this commendation should be every Christian’s aspiration.
Hezekiah destroyed “the bronze snake Moses had made” (v.4). This bronze serpent demonstrated God’s presence and healing power in time of crisis (Numbers 21:4-9). Later, the people worshipped the snake instead of God, and it became an idol. A similar example is Gideon and his ephod which became an idol (Judges 8:25-27). What are some objects or practices in the church today that have become idols?
Take note of the king’s other reforms mentioned in v.4. What abominable practices does Paul urge Christians to remove from our lives (Colossians 3:3-9). Holy living requires that we remove old ways of life that are not pleasing to God and replace them with new ones (Ephesians 4:22-24). In the king’s reformation, vs.5-6 list his personal commitment to God. Righteous living draws us closer to the Lord and the Lord closer to us, which guarantees success (vs.7,8).
The narration changes in vs.9-11. What happens when an individual or a nation disobeys the Lord and does what is evil in his sight (v.12)?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Lord, I want to do what is right in order to glorify your name. Please help me walk in righteousness all my life.
