Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th February 2021 – Superior Message from God’s Son

Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th February 2021
Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th February 2021 Thursday Message

TOPIC: Superior Message from God’s Son

Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.

INTRODUCTION TO HEBREWS
The Epistle to the Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were struggling on two fronts. First there were the pressure and persecution from their fellow Jews who saw them as traitors to their traditional religion. They and their families were rejected in the society and were being denied their rights. It is the same kind of situation today for many Christians, especially converts from Islam or in societies that adopt Islam as state religion. The other pressure was how best to make sense of both the difference and the connection between Christianity and their former faith. The writer tackled these problems with series of comparisons between Jesus Christ and various personalities and ceremonies of the Jewish tradition. He argued that Jesus Christ is the High Priest. The experiences of the heroes and heroines of faith are to encourage us to persevere to the end and be rewarded by God.

Scripture: Hebrew 1:1-14

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?

• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

God spoke in various ways as recorded in the Old Testament. All the prophets were God’s ambassadors to His people and the world. Ambassadors represent the King and relay his message to the people. They, however, must step aside when the King’s son is present. The writer here demonstrated the superiority of the Son’s revelation in seven ways. Find these in vs.2-3 and compare the following seven passages: Romans 8:17; Colossians 1:16; 1:15; 1:17; 3:1; John 1:14 and Titus 2:14.

Significant messages in the Old Testament were sent to the prophets and the people through angels. The Jews revered them as God’s special messengers. The writer here cited seven Old Testament quotations to clearly show that even these special messengers are inferior to Christ. Take for example, worship. Angels refuse to be worshipped but the Lord Jesus, being God, received worship and is to be worshipped (Revelations 22:8-9; compare Matthew 14:33). Note the truths revealed in these quotations. How do they convince you of Christ’s supremacy? Reflect on them and join with others to worship Him.

Practice/Word Application
• For further studies: Note the reaction of some Jews to the visitation of angels in Judges 13; Daniel 10; Revelation 22:8-9.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Thank you, God, for speaking to us in your Son, Jesus Christ. • Pray for the educational needs of the children of missionaries

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• Ex. 21-22; 2 Thess. 1
