Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th August 2023 Outline:

Idol worship was the major expression of religion in Corinth. There were several popular pagan temples in the city. Idolatry is still a serious problem today and it takes different forms. It may not be statues of wood or stone as such but rather plastic cards, power, pleasure, prestige etc. Putting our trust in anything other than God is idolatry. Note therefore Paul’s charge in v.14.

In warning against idolatry, Paul reminds us of the implication of our participation in the Holy Communion. The cup and the bread, the body and blood of Jesus, are symbols of our oneness in Christ (vs.16-17). It unites us with Him and with the church, His body. We must give Christ our total allegiance (vs.21-22).

The Corinthian Christians faced the dilemma of whether to eat meat sacrificed to idols or not. Similarly, we are confronted with the question of how to determine what is “permissible”, “beneficial”, and “constructive” (v.23). Paul gives two principles that can guide us today as we relate with non-Christians in our communities and exercise our freedom in Christ:

i. Consider the good of others (v.24): Exercise your freedom with a sense of responsibility as well as sensitivity to and love for others.
ii. Think about the glory of God (v.31): Is the motive behind our action to bring glory to God or not?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
