TOPIC: Modesty in Church Worship
Opening Prayer: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
Today’s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:2-16
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
Apostle Paul thanks the church in Corinth for keeping the traditions of faith as they were handed down to them. He then uses the occasion to instruct them on another topic of modesty in public worship.
Observe the protocol in leadership and headship as instructed by God in v.3.
Regulations were presented for women in public worship as well as for men. In that society, it was a custom for women to cover their heads in public. The church in Corinth had temple prostitutes who didn’t cover their heads and some of the Christian woman were beginning to emulate them. Has your church/ fellowship put any rules in place to ensure modesty in worship? In dealing with cultural issues, we should always aim at promoting unity in the church (cf., Romans 14:13,19), enhancing our witness for Christ to the unbelieving world, and avoiding contentions in worship (v.16).
Paul stated the need for gender distinction as well as gender interdependence in the church. Paul did not suggest that women have lower status than men before God; rather he asserts that women participated in leading worship as men did (v.5). Man and woman are equal in creation but, there are natural distinctions between them, and different God-given responsibilities.
The reference to angels in v.10 presupposes that angels do join in our worship, hence the need to conduct ourselves properly.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Help me, Lord, to be modest when I show up in the place of worship and not to attract attention to myself but to honour you in all my conduct.
