Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 August 2023 MESSAGE:
It is recommended that you find time to read 1 Samuel 11 & 12, the story behind this psalm. David committed adultery with Bathsheba while Uriah, her husband, was fighting the king’s battle. David tried to rope in Uriah when he realised that Bathsheba was pregnant, but he failed. David finally eliminated him and took Bathsheba as wife. When prophet Nathan confronted him, his confession was simple, ‘I have sinned against the Lord’. He received instant forgiveness. This psalm shows the depth of that simple statement of confession.
Notice the basis of David’s cry for mercy (v.1) and the importance of taking personal responsibility for our sin (v.3). It is not the devil, nor my parents, it’s me O Lord. How does his sin against Uriah turn out to be sin against God (v.4; cf. Luke 15:21)? For the truth in v.5, see Romans 5:19.
When we confess our sin, whatever sin, God forgives us. What did David promise to do, having received God’s forgiveness (vs.13,14)? Why would he want to do these things? The statement of David in vs.16-17 reinforces what we saw in Psalm 50. A “broken and contrite heart” is a humble and submissive heart that looks up to God for mercy. God values a repentant heart more than our sacrifices and financial support in the church.
