TOPIC: Jehu, God’s Instrument of Judgment

OPENING PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 9:17-37

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Recovering from his wounds, king Joram feels insecure and is afraid of coups. Observe how he desperately seeks peace (vs.17,19,22). It is sad that many people pursue peace outside of what God offers. They can only find anxiety, turmoil and finally God’s judgment. “There is no peace for the wicked” (Isaiah 48:22).

Observe in v.21 where Joram and Ahaziah met Jehu. On the very property that belonged to Naboth! Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, stole that plot of land after killing its owner (see 1 Kings 21). The prophecy in 1 Kings 21:17-24 is fulfilled fully through Jehu (vs.25-26). There will always be consequences of our evil actions. Unfortunately, not us alone but also our household or community. Knowing this, how will it change the way you do things?

Notice the action Jezebel took having realised that her wicked life was about to end (v.30). Was she attempting to intimidate Jehu with her beauty and royal dignity? Jehu was, however, not turned aside by anything. She had destroyed many innocent lives and her blood was shed as an example of God’s judgment against all cruel leaders. Ironically, when the dogs had finished with Jezebel, there was virtually nothing of her: painting, adorned hair and all, left to see (vs.34,35). Solomon is right to call all ‘vanity’ (Ecclesiastes 1:2)!

For Reflection
Reflect: What can you learn from Jehu’s leadership?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Deliver your people, dear Lord, from the hand of oppressive leaders.
