TOPIC: The Destruction of Three Nations

OPENING PRAYER: Grant me depth of insight, revelation and knowledge as I meditate on this passage, O Lord.

SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Isaiah 21:1-17

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

SU DAILY GUIDE FOR 3RD NOVEMBER 2023 MESSAGE:

The three nations whose destruction is being shown to the prophet in this passage are Babylon (vs.1-10), Edom (vs.11-12) and Arabia (vs.13-17). Notice how Babylon is described (v.1). How is this description fitting to this land? Although the nature of the inhabitants of Babylon is not depicted clearly in this passage, in Isaiah 13:6-9; 20-21, like many pagan cities of the time, they did not worship the one true God who revealed Himself to Israel. Instead, they worshipped their own pagan gods. They had entrusted their lives to the gods whom they had carved with their own hands (v.9).

Also because of their sophistication and wealth, they were very proud and attributed their success to their gods. The sin of pride is so rampant today even among Christians. Many Christian homes have broken down because spouses are unable to bring themselves to say “I am sorry, I was wrong” to one another.

The job of a prophet is not an easy one, here compared to that of a lookout or watchman (vs.6-8 cf., Ezekiel 3:17), a job that requires total concentration. This will account for the effect on Isaiah in vs.3–4. But Isaiah had no doubt the message was from the Lord, and he courageously proclaimed it (v.10).

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
