TOPIC: Israel’s Redeemer Is Strong

Opening prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

scripture: Jeremiah 50:33–46

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

More facts are provided in today’s passage on the misdeeds of Babylon. She had been cruel and oppressive. God hates oppression of any kind. Oppressive systems are against the will of God. The Babylonians will suffer because they oppressed the Israelites (v.33). Notice the various judgments God would inflict upon them (vv.35–38; 44). Oppression is not in keeping with love. It is humiliating and dehumanizing and an insult to God Almighty, our Creator. O the danger of power and the folly of thinking we can do anything we like, not minding what other people may feel! Babylon had obviously experienced times of plenty and knew what it was to ride on the back of the enemy and force captives to do her bidding. But those experiences would be reversed as God would punish Babylon severely. In contrast, Israel would experience the long–desired rest as God redeems her and fights her cause (v.34). Like Babylon, if we too fail to act within the limit God imposes on us or think we can act in total defiance of his will in any matter, we make ourselves liable to his severe judgment.

Practice/Word Application
• And so: It pays therefore, to live soberly being fair to all at all time.

Hymn: Rock of Ages, cleft for Me
1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

2. While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Prayer points
• Lord, may a sincere determination to please you be the basis for all I do.
• Thank God for the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 126:1
