QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?

MESSAGE: One of the comforting promises we have in the Bible is the assurance of God’s abiding presence with us always and in all situations (Matthew 28:20). This psalm opens with the same comforting declaration (v.1). The Psalmist, however, was quick to point out that God’s presence does not guarantee immunity from troubles in this life (cf. John 16:33). Look at vs.2b, 3 and 6 to see the picture of possible troubles that we could experience. How do these compare with what is happening in your context?

In recent times, we have experienced many troubling events that unsettle us, such as Covid-19 pandemic, global economic recession, natural disasters, wars, terrorism, and several others. Our natural reaction to these events is fear and worry but the Palmist tells us not to fear. Note also what God wants us to do when we are in trouble (Psalm 34: 17; Matthew 8: 23 – 26).

What encouragement do we have in this passage in the midst of troubles (vs.1, 4, 7 &11)?

The “river” in v.4 is a metaphor for God. Like the river, so does God’s presence refresh and sustain His people. Since we have this sure promise of God’s ever-abiding presence, how are we expected to respond (vs.2&10a)?

PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
What Next? Your troubles are temporary, be at peace because God’s presence guarantees your safety, security, and ultimate victory. Thank God for this.
