Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 August 2023 Message:
Athaliah, the only woman queen of Judah who reigned for 6 years, walked in the evil footsteps of her parents, Ahab and Jezebel. Her plan to destroy the royal heirs is to terminate David’s house, thus attempting to preserve Ahab’s house (v.1). Note what people can do to their own blood when they are power-hungry! Those “who draw the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26.52). That was Athaliah’s fate (v.16).
Observe how the Lord protects Joash (vs.2-3). No one can thwart God’s purposes of grace. Despite all the enemy’s evil schemes, God will always raise up people like Jehosheba. Through her courage, the royal line of David through which the Messiah came, was preserved.
What lesson can we learn from Jehoiada, the priest? Note also the strategy he uses (v.9). He chooses the seventh year (year of liberation) and the Sabbath when there were two detachments of soldiers together. He works towards restoring the throne to seven-year-old Joash, the legitimate king. Observe the people’s reaction just after the new covenant is established between the Lord, the king and themselves (v.18). Is there some form of idolatry to be wiped out from your life?
