TOPIC: Led Astray

Opening Prayer: Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

Scripture: 2 KINGS 21: 1-26

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 September 2023 Outline:

The long reign of Manasseh—55 years on the throne—only earned him the rather grim verdict: “He did evil in the eyes of the Lord” (vs.1,2). Faithfulness in service is more desirable and praiseworthy than the length of time. The king followed “the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites” (v.2). The instruction in Deuteronomy 18:9 was meant to help the people avoid evil worldly influence. See also Romans 12:2.
Vs.3-7 reveal a long list of king Manasseh’s detestable practices. These include human sacrifice (vs.6,16), cumulating in total disregard for God’s Word. Note the promises in v.8. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

Although the love of God urges us to serve Him, His divine wrath, such as those mentioned in vs.12-14, also warns us to draw closer to the Lord. John the Baptist queried those who responded to his preaching, “Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” It is wise to flee from the wrath of God.
“Like father like son!” we may say about Amon who succeeded his father, Manasseh, and ruled for only two years. What faith legacy are we bequeathing to our children?”

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me to do what is right in your eyes and be obedient to you all my life. Help me not to lead others astray.
