Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 September 2023 Outline:
In the next six days our readings will take us through the darkest period in the history of Judah, the Southern Kingdom of Israel. But we begin on a brighter note: the reign of Josiah who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (v.2). Why was Josiah assessed so positively?
Josiah’s assessment followed from his positive response to the discovery of the “Book of the Law” (v.8). Notice Josiah’s immediate reaction on hearing the words of the Book (read vs.11-13). Why was the Lord angry with His people (v.13)? Israel was God’s chosen people. God’s anger against His people teaches us that we must never tolerate sin in our lives because sin grieves the heart of God and no matter how close we have been to Him, it can lead to punishment.
How was Josiah rewarded for showing genuine repentance? Read vs.18-20 again. Repentance is key to our being accepted into God’s kingdom. May He always grant us genuine sorrow for sin and the will to turn back unto the paths of righteous living.
