Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 September 2023 Outline:

Josiah completed the reformation of temple worship with an incomparably elaborate celebration of the feast of Passover never seen before in the entire history of Israel (v.22). Why do you think the writer considers that “neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him” (v.25)? Josiah was sincere: he turned to the Lord “with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength” (v.25). God calls us to total commitment to His service.
V.26 shows us how dire the consequences of sin can be.

Why did the Lord not “turn away from the heat of his fierce anger” despite all that Josiah had done to turn things around? The verse tells us that it was “because of all that Manasseh had done to arouse his anger” (see chapter 21.1-17). We should not tolerate sin with the excuse that we can receive forgiveness after repentance. Sin can leave a deep scar which cannot be removed. Although God does forgive us, the scar will remain indelible. So do not tolerate sin in any form or shape; for sin is sin no matter the form it takes, and the ‘nice’ name given it.

Regrettably, Josiah’s son, Jehoahaz, failed to follow the example of his father (vs.31 and 32). His reign marked the beginning of the fall of Judah.
