TOPIC: Handling Internal Disputes

OPENING PRAYER
May my heart, O Lord, be receptive to your word as I meditate on it.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 6:1-11

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?

MESSAGE: Note the three principles Paul urges should direct our settling non-criminal disputes among us (vs.1, 4&7). See what Jesus said we should do when we are offended by our fellow believer in Matthew 18:15-17. Criminal cases are the prerogative of the state (Romans 13:1-5). However, we have no reason not to be able to sort out interpersonal disputes within the Christian community. Paul gives two reasons we should not drag ourselves before unbelieving judges (see vs.2&3). If we will judge the world and angels, then we can arbitrate in petty disputes between us.

We are usually not satisfied with internal settlement because of greed and insistence on our rights. How should we deal with these tendencies (v.7b)?

Look again at the list of wickedness in vs.9-10. We tend to make distinctions among them. Notice that greed and slander are included in the same list with adultery and homosexuality! Paul describes the change, which has taken place in the Corinthians who became Christians (v.11).

Meditate on what Christ’s death has done for you: it cleansed you from all sins, set you apart and declared you ‘not guilty’. We are expected to live it out!

HYMN FOR TODAY – CHIEF OF SINNERS
1. Chief of sinners though I be,
Jesus shed His blood for me;
Died that I might live on high,
Died that I might never die;
As the branch is to the vine,
I am His, and He is mine.

2. O the height of Jesus’ love!
Higher than the Heaven above;
Deeper than the deepest sea,
Lasting as eternity;
Love that found me—wondrous thought!
Found me when I sought Him not!

3. Jesus only can impart
Balm to heal the smitten heart;
Peace that flows from sin forgiven,
Joy that lifts the soul to Heaven;
Faith and hope to walk with God
In the way that Enoch trod.

4. Chief of sinners though I be,
Christ is all in all to me;
All my wants to Him are known,
All my sorrows are His own;
Safe with Him from earthly strife,
He sustains the hidden life.

5. O my Savior, help afford
By Thy Spirit and Thy Word!
When my wayward heart would stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Grace in time of need supply
While I live and when I die.

CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, help me to have an attitude of constantly forgiving those who wrong me because you have forgiven me much more than I am required to forgive.
