Topic: Sing to the Lord!

OPENING PRAYER (Scripture Union Discovery 11 February 2018)
Great are You, God, and most worthy of praise! (4) Today, I proclaim the Good News that God saves (2).

Read PSALM 96 (New International Version (NIV)
1 Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come into his courts.
9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes,
he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Reflect – TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO CREATE YOUR OWN “NEW SONG” TO THE LORD.

My phone beeped. A text from my friend telling me my “favorite” advertisement was on television. She would be laughing because she knew I would now be singing those words all night! And, with a “joyful noise” for a voice, these random outbursts are not always appreciated.

Many of the words of this psalm recall hymns and choruses from down the years. But it isn’t just about repeating the old. Time and again the psalmist reminds us that we have a God worth singing about. We have a new song to sing and the whole earth joins in (1). We are brought slap bang into the middle of God’s wonderful creation and provision for us. The psalmist can’t contain himself as he encourages all the different parts of creation to rise up, sing and rejoice. This is the God and the creation that Paul speaks of in Romans. The one true God, not the idols that other nations worship (5).

There is also a strong sense of stability, of being anchored. The world is established (10). There will be judgment, but not by humans. The only one able to judge is a righteous and faithful God (13). Thanks be to him.
