TOPIC: The Ten Commandment

OPENING PRAYER: Open my eyes O Lord that I might behold wondrous things from your word in Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: EXODUS 20:1-17

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
• Q 8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

MESSAGE: As an emerging nation, Israel needed constitution and by-laws that would define their operations and relationships. God here reminded them, “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (v.2). This statement was the basis on which the laws were issued. Unlike other nations that had many gods (idols), the children of Israel were to recognize and worship only one God (also see Deuteronomy 6:4).

The Ten Commandments are broadly classified into two categories. The first four defined their relationship with God. The remaining six define their relationships with one another (vs.12-17). As they observe these laws, they would become a light to the gentile nations around them.

Although the New Covenant in Christ grants salvation by grace through faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8), we are not excused from obeying the Lord’s Commandments. In fact, it is for our welfare and healthy living that we obey them! How does v.17 address a critical social ill that is the source of corruption in our society today? The Lord Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 6:19-21 and Luke 12:15 helps us deal with this social canker.

For further studies: Find out what Jesus said about the Ten Commandments in Matthew 4:10; 10:37; 5:21-22, 27-28&38-42; 12:36; Luke.16:13; Mark. 2:27, 28.
