US: Arizona Couple Arrested for Alleged Child Abuse After Their Four Adopted Children Were Found Locked in Home

A couple have been arrested for suspicion of child abuse and face charges after their four adopted children were found locked inside the Tucson, Arizona, family home without access to food or water on Saturday.

Carol, 64, and Benito, 69, Gutierrez have been charged with three counts of child abuse and were arrested after deputies responded to a call in the 4100 block of North Flowing Wells Road.

One of the children had escaped through a window of the family’s home and alerted the police from a Family Dollar store in the area. The clerk noted the child’s age and dishevelled condition and dialled 911.

Four children aged between 6 and 12 were found locked in separate bedrooms and were immediately removed from the home.

The media release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that the children discovered “were kept in separate bedrooms, which were locked from the outside, with no access to food, water, lights or bathroom facilities for up to twelve hours at a time.” Only one of the bedrooms was found to have a bucket that was used as a toilet.

The sheriff’s department investigation is ongoing.
