A primary school teacher in Ibadan, Odunayo Omoniyi, has secured a divorce after her husband abandoned her for 10 years.
The teacher had gone to a Customary Court at Agodi, Ibadan, asking it to dissolve her marriage to Oluwasegun Omoniyi, who had failed to perform his responsibility as a husband since 2007.
Odunayo had also accused the husband who is also a teacher of failing to cater for their only child.
She told the court on Friday, that her husband left her in his family house immediately after the naming ceremony of their child in 2007.
“He abandoned me with his father a day after the naming ceremony of our kid and only came back six months later.
“He pleaded with me to remain in his father’s house pending when he will have money to rent a house, but l did not set my eyes on him till 2015 when he came back and asked for forgiveness.
“He gave me N10, 000 for the payment of our child’s common entrance into secondary school and disappeared again.
“My lord, the loneliness is becoming unbearable and I do not think he is ready to continue with the marriage.
“Therefore the court should separate us and order him to perform his parental responsibilities for the only child of our 10-year-old union,’’ Odunayo prayed the court.
Although Olusegun denied the accusations by his wife, he however urged the court to uphold the request of the plaintiff and dissolve the marriage.
Consequently, the president of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage and handed over the custody of the child to the mother.
Balogun ordered the defendant to be paying N4,000 monthly as allowance for the upkeep of the child.
