Ex-Equatorial Guinea Anti-Corruption Chief Balthazar Ebang Faces 18-Year Jail Term for Embezzlement
Balthazar Engonga Ebang
, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), is on trial for alleged large-scale corruption, with prosecutors seeking an 18-year prison sentence and hefty financial penalties.

The high-profile trial, which began on Monday, June 30, involves Ebang and several other officials connected to a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Finance. Ebang is facing serious accusations of embezzlement, illicit enrichment, and abuse of power, with prosecutors alleging he misappropriated over one billion CFA francs — equivalent to approximately $1.67 million USD — during his tenure at ANIF.

Prosecutors have broken down the sentence requests as follows:

  • 8 years for embezzlement

  • 4 years, 5 months for illicit enrichment

  • 6 years, 1 day for abuse of power

In addition, they are seeking a 910 million CFA francs fine and a ban preventing Ebang from holding public office.

The defense has strongly denied all allegations, insisting that the charges are politically motivated and lack evidence.

Ebang, who was already in the public spotlight after explicit videos of him surfaced online in late 2024, now faces mounting legal pressure as part of this major corruption probe. The court has not yet delivered its verdict.
