2 Kings 4:1-7
1 A man from the group of prophets had a wife. This man died, and his wife cried out to Elisha, “My husband was like a servant to you. Now he is dead! You know he honored the Lord. But he owed money to a man. Now that man is coming to take my two boys and make them his slaves!”
2 Elisha answered, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
The woman said, “I don’t have anything in the house except a jar of olive oil.”
3 Then Elisha said, “Go and borrow bowls from all your neighbors. They must be empty. Borrow plenty of bowls. 4 Then go to your house and close the doors. Only you and your sons will be in the house. Then pour the oil into all the bowls. Fill them, and put them in a separate place.”
5 So the woman left Elisha, went into her house, and shut the door. Only she and her sons were in the house. Her sons brought the bowls to her and she poured oil. 6 She filled many bowls. Finally, she said to her son, “Bring me another bowl.”
But all the bowls were full. One of the sons said to her, “There aren’t any more bowls.” Then the oil in the jar was finished!
7 When she told the man of God what had happened, Elisha said to her, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt. You and your sons can live on the money that is left.”
MFM Daily Devotional 15th February 2023 MESSAGE
God does not want His children to be debtors (Romans 13:8). That is why, in Deuteronomy 28:12b, He said, “Thou shall lend unto nations and shall not borrow.” It is a blessing that God pronounced and conferred on obedient believers. Hence, the will of our all-sufficient God is that His children should live in abundance, not lack. He assured that even in the time of famine, His own children will be satisfied.
Why then do some believers find themselves in debt? Some debts are so huge that the debtors die trying to pay back while some become bad debts.
The first reason some believers become debtors is that they do not know their rights and kingdom inheritance. You need to know that something belongs to you before you can claim or possess it. The will of God for you as a New Testament believer is that you lend to others and nations and not borrow.
The second reason is the poor knowledge of God’s Word on the part of such believers as well as their failure to apply the principles that govern financial prosperity in His kingdom. You will continuously prosper as long as you apply those biblical principles. Some of such principles include the law of sowing and reaping, counting cost, resource management, goal setting, financial planning and prudence.
The third reason is stinginess towards God. Many believers who fail to pay their tithes, give offerings and first fruits only open their finances to devourers, the spirit of indebtedness and financial wastage. For this reason, many are caught in the trap of unexplainable financial losses, unending borrowing and diverse financial problems today. They close the heavens over their lives by their own misdeeds and disobedience.
The fourth reason is some believers’ failure to effectively manage the resources God gave them. Many people are wasteful spenders and do not live within their income. The law of prudence requires that you should not eat with your ten fingers and should not consume your seeds. Rather, you should set part of your income aside for saving and investment. You should also cut out unnecessary spending and focus on needs not wants.
Beloved, avoid spending money on frivolities, impulse buying and indiscriminate use of credit facility. Debt is avoidable. Be wise and disciplined! God has promised to bless His children abundantly.
