TOPIC: Set A Watch Over Thy Mouth

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Ezekiel 14-15; James 2

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Psalm 114:2-4

MEMORY VERSE: “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.” – James 3:2

MESSAGE: Talk is cheap, anyone can open their mouth to talk. Is it not my mouth? No one can do anything to me, I am out spoken, I don’t like to hide my feelings. These are what people usually say so as not to be accountable for what they say or do. But the Bible tells us that we must account for every word that proceeds out of our mouths.

Are you an interrupter, finisher of sentences, talk-over-another kind of person, listen-so-I-can-respond kind of person, how-can-I-turn-this-conversation-back-from-me participant, say 1000 words in a minute, likes to dominate conversations, hardly listens to others talk? Are you one of these characters? Can God meet you, when you are in these situations or this way? Manifestation of any of these attributes separates you from God.

Will God leave you in this darkness of self-denial, self-inflicted separation from Him? No, His grace and love is sufficient but we have to set a watch over our mouths and keep watch over the door of our lips.

The question now is what kind of seeds are you planting with the words that issue from your mouth? Is it profanity, anger, hostility, unkind words spoken to our loved ones? Is your speech a continual cause of sorrow and distress to people? The truth is that the tongue possesses a tremendous power. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Proverbs 18:21).

David understood the power of the tongue and prayed God to set a watch over it. While angry, say nothing because in the multitude of words, sin is not lacking but one who restrains their lips is wise (Proverbs 6:16-19). It is better to regret you didn’t say something than to regret what you said, words spoken cannot be recalled. Wound from stones and sticks do heal but words wounds the soul. Read the Epistle of James 3:3-12.

The fact here is that no man can tame the tongue, so make Psalm 141:3 your daily prayer and watchword.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

PROPHETIC WORD:

THE HAND OF THE LORD SHALL BRIDLE THY TONGUE NOT TO DEFILE THE TEMPLE OF GOD WHICH IS THY BODY.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING

1 Father, help me to bridle my tongue, in the name of Jesus.

2 My words shall sow good seeds and yield good harvests, in the name of Jesus.

3 My words will not ensnare me, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING

4 Father, teach me to set a watch over my mouth, in the name of Jesus.

5 By the words of my mouth, I shall be justified, in the name of Jesus.

6 I shall not offend in words, in the name of Jesus.

7 Father, teach me to speak words that edify, in the name of Jesus.
