Scripture Union Daily Guide 10 August 2020

Topic: Remember His Goodness

Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.

Scripture: Psalm 106:24–48

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Throughout the history of ancient Israel, God wanted them to recognise themselves as his chosen people and acknowledge him as their Father. He delivered them from slavery and gave them a land of their own. What did God require of them? Praise, honour, and gratitude. Instead, what was their attitude? Disrespect and contempt (v.24). See others in vv.25,28 & 36–39. Such disobedient lifestyle was bound to incur God’s wrath (vv.29, 40–42).

Idolatry is an all–time abhorrent practice in the sight of God. When the Psalmist in Psalm 24 asks, “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord or stand in his holy place?”, the answer provided includes “the one who has clean hands and a pure heart and who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god” (vv.3&4). At a critical time when Israel needed someone to stand in the gap and intercede for them, what role did Phinehas play that we can emulate (vv.30–31; Numbers 25:6–13)?

Consider the grace of God towards his people in vv.42–46. This attribute of our God demands responses expressed in v.48.
