TOPIC: Blessings That Money Cannot Buy
OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE: 2 King 4:8-37
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
We have a mandate to display the glory of God in the world by the way we live our lives (Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 2:9). We can see Elisha fulfilling this mandate in vs.8-10. His lifestyle made such an impression on the people such that a wealthy family in Shunem recognised that he was a “holy man of God” and willingly offered to support his ministry with uncommon hospitality. Does your lifestyle demonstrate that you are a child of God?
Elisha thought it necessary to appreciate the hospitality he received from the Shunammite family (vs.11-17). They provided physical support for him, but he brought divine intervention that money could not buy into their situation. The birth of the boy (v.17) and his being raised back to life (vs.35-37) are God’s blessings that money could not buy. Everyone, including the rich has needs. So, it is good to always look for ways to appreciate kind gestures, even from the rich. A little gift can be a great encouragement to do more.
What other lessons can we learn from the Shunammite woman in vs.20-28? Compare the action of Gehazi in v.27 with that of Elisha, the prophet of God.
