Scripture Union Daily Guide 12th June 2023 MESSAGE:

It was a difficult time. There was famine in the land due to a covenant curse, a consequence of the people’s rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 28:23-24). Observe that these servants of God were not spared from the effect of God’s judgment on the nation. They had to vend for themselves to augment the little support that few faithful Israelites gave them. An African proverb says, “Hunger does not kill anyone, what kills people are the things they eat because they are hungry.” This seems to be the situations of the sons of the prophet in vs.38-41.

The one who went to the field might have gathered poisonous gourds along with edible ones due to ignorance, carelessness, or desperation for survival. Being faithful to God might not necessarily immune us against national economic troubles, but we can be sure that God will intervene in our situations (vs.40-41, 42-44; Psalm 33:18-19). Therefore, we must not adopt unwholesome strategies and practices out of desperation for survival.

What can we learn from the man from Baal-Shalishah (v.42; cf. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5)? We must not use economic hardship as an excuse for neglecting to support God’s work. The little gift with God’s blessing achieved much.

Practice/Word Application

PRAYER FOCUS
WATCH OUT!! DANGEROUS DOCTRINES

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions. – -2Timothy 4:3

THANK GOD FOR:
► Giving us the scriptures that enable us to know the correct teachings in righteousness.
► The timely warning about false prophets that characterize this age.

PRAY FOR:
► The strengthening of our hearts by the grace of God to enable us withstand the strange happenings of this end time.
► The teachings of sound doctrines in all our SU formation as the elders continue to ensure that only brethren standing in the faith are invited to our programmes.
► The mercy of God upon SU as a union that we will all continue in the sound doctrines of our fathers in the faith.

PRAY AGAINST:
► Failing to study God’s word thereby allowing ourselves to be carried about by every wind of doctrine; human cunning and craftiness in deceitful schemes.
► Believing every spirit instead of testing the spirits to see whether they are from God.
