Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th January 2021 Message:

The heading for this Psalm calls it “A Song of Ascents.” It is one of 15 Psalms with that title. This means that it is one of the songs that the pilgrims used to sing as they ascended the hill leading to Jerusalem for one of the three annual festivals listed in Deuteronomy 16:16.

It is a beautiful song about brotherly unity. It employs two memorable illustrations to describe the effect. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit; and dew both refreshes and brings fruitfulness to the mountains. In the building of the Tower of Babel, the power of unity was displayed. The people had one language and one mind and were determined to accomplish their single goal. Except that it was contrary to God’s agenda and He had to confuse their language, there could have been no stopping of that project (Gen. 11: 1 – 9).

Jesus, in His high priestly prayer, prayed earnestly for the unity of the Church (John 17: 20 – 23). Sadly, this unity is very much lacking in the Church in our days so much that George Verwer who is famous for world missions, has written a parody or caricature of the hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers…”: Backward Christian soldiers, Fleeing from the fight, With the cross of Jesus, Nearly out of sight… Like a mighty tortoise, moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading, where we’ve often trod. We are much divided, many bodies we, Having different doctrines, Not much charity.

Practice/Word Application
• So what? What are you doing to promote brotherly love?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, please restore brotherly love in our Christian communities.• • Pray to walk in the power that raised Jesus from the dead.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with 2 Samuel 22:40

Bible In One Year: Gen. 36-38; Rom. 12
