Reflection
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 May 2020

Message: This short chapter ends the first section of the book of the prophet Jeremiah which dealt with God’s judgment on Judah (46–51 is prophecy against other Nations and 52 is historical supplement). After surviving the fall of Jerusalem, Jeremiah was forcefully taken to Egypt, yet he remained faithful in spite of Jerusalem’s destruction. Years of obedience had made him strong and courageous. In this passage, we have a message of encouragement from God, through Jeremiah, for Baruch. He had been a faithful servant to God and Jeremiah.

However, he had become discouraged. It seems he was discouraged because of the king’s reaction to God’s message which Baruch read out to him. Notice the promise God gave him through Jeremiah in v.5. However, God did not promise that things would be easy for any of his servants, neither for Jeremiah (see 1:17–19), nor for Baruch (vv.2–5). And he does not promise us an easy life either. What he promises is his abiding presence and help (Isaiah 43:1–5). See also Matthew 28:20b; Romans 8:28.

Let us not be discouraged if the going seems tough. Let us be among the overcomers. See the promises God gave to the overcomers at the end of each of the seven letters to the churches in Revelation chapters 2 and 3.
