Topic: David’s Prayer

Opening Prayer: Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 7:18–29

Reflection
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
• Is there any prayer for me to remember?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 18th June 2020 Message

David humbly accepted the promise from God and acknowledged God’s elevation and recognition of him from a shepherd boy to a successful king (v.18). Interestingly, he connected God’s promise to him with those made earlier to Israel, through Moses, on Mount Sinai (vv.22–24; cf. Exodus 19:2–6).

God’s covenant promise was not because of David’s merit or righteousness or good deeds. It was established out of God’s mercy and grace for the sake of his word (v.21), the glory of his name (v.26), for the sake of the people of Israel (2 Samuel 5:12) and ultimately for the salvation of all nations (see Isaiah 11:1, 10).

David accepted God’s promise in humility and faith. He looked into the future and believed that God will establish his throne “forever”. Did God do this? Jesus, the descendant of King David, is King forever and establishes the rule of God in the hearts of all who come to him in faith (see Luke 1:31–33)

Practice/Word Application
• So: To help you think through the prayers of David, list and meditate on the attributes of God that he used in his prayer and his questions to God in vv.18, 19b, 20, 23?

O deeper yet, I pray
1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.

Refrain
O deeper yet, I pray,
And higher every day,
And wiser, bless?d Lord,
In Thy precious, holy Word.

2. Deeper, deeper, bless?d Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,
And His perfect will.

Prayer Points
• Lord, help me, like David, to accept your promises by Henry F. Lyte, in humility and in faith.
• Pray that God will protect Christians against hostile governments.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 22:17a
